Abstract

Integrating local wisdom into instructional practices has emerged as a vital strategy for preserving cultural identity while fostering context-responsive learning experiences. This qualitative case study investigated how local wisdom functions as a pedagogical foundation within community-based learning environments. The study involved 20 undergraduate students from Universitas Madako Tolitoli who designed and implemented place-conscious learning modules across community learning spaces in Tolitoli Regency. Data were gathered through focus group discussions, classroom observations, and reflective journals, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed three primary instructional strategies: narrative-based pedagogy using oral folklore, place-based experiential learning with tangible cultural artifacts, and contextual problem-solving rooted in indigenous ecological knowledge. These strategies significantly enhanced student engagement, fostered core character values such as mutual cooperation, and strengthened cultural identity. However, implementation was constrained by structural friction, including a scarcity of documented local instructional materials, rigid national curriculum benchmarks, and initial learner skepticism. The study concludes that local wisdom should be repositioned from an extracurricular element to a primary pedagogical asset. Sustaining these practices requires policy support for local curriculum development, targeted pre-service teacher training, and active partnerships with community elders to ensure authentic cultural transmission alongside academic rigor.
